Boscombe Pier Better Off Without The Artificial Reef

Comments Columnists, Featured, Josh Aggars

So the artificial reef is a dud and no amount of ‘the council are set to sue blatant rip off merchant NZ company or withold final payment’ is going to make any difference whatsoever. It was always thus and always likely to be so.

They got the fundamentals wrong at the start. Bournemouth Bay just doesn’t get proper swell so no amount of sand bags was ever going to change that. Instead the council got duped, a few positive thinkers went along with it hoping good intensions would defy the laws of physics and nature and we are left with a big bill and an even bigger pile of sand. Oh well c’est la vie.

So let’s enjoy the fact the reef has at least helped regenerate the pier and parts of the area. It is now much more of a focal point and community for surfers and you feel you’re slightly less likely to step on broken glass than in the past. Let’s take that as a win and move on. Council you’re wasting your breath going after the boys from down under. Just let it be a warning to other towns not to be sold a promise based on lies and, in short, to pay millions for your own sand!

And now some pics of Boscombe Pier away from the reef.
